First choose a race and gender. Solwit and Kelon are the two races that are initially available.

The character-creation steps in the Savage Worlds rulebook are straightforward. Restrictions and additions to the list of Skills, Hindrances, Edges, and Powers are listed here.

Skills not available are Driving, Guts, and Piloting. Spirit rolls are used where Guts would be called for.

Additional skills are Spellcasting and Spiritcrafting (though only available after taking the Arcane Background (Magic) or Arcane Background (Spiritcraft) Edges).

Knowledge subjects of particular relevance in Tayel include mining, smithing, farming, spirits, and arcana.
