The division of all things into Principles is a long-standing philosophy of the world and magic. Accordingly, Principle, sometimes also called an element, is a foundational aspect of the nature of the world. The philosophy holds that Principles are invoked and manipulated in arcane magic to bring about the effect desired.

The four Principles are Void, Energy, Order, and Change. When thought of as elements, they are often referred to as air, fire, earth, and water, respectively.
